On a recent Saturday morning I paid a visit to my friend Lin Rhea, an extremely talented blacksmith who is keeping an ancient tradition alive. He specializes in historic blacksmithing and makes the most incredible things with fire, metal, and strength–from forged scissors, to pliers, to the most stunning knives. I decided to share a live demonstration on my YouTube page, which features all kinds of pioneer skills. I hope you’ll subscribe for free to the channel so you can learn about more important people like Lin.

Forging a Steel Striker: A Visit to The Blacksmith

In this video Lin taught me how to make a pocket-sized steel striker for starting fires. Being an outdoorsy gal, he thought it would be useful in my adventures. I couldn’t believe the strength that was required to make it happen, he makes it look so easy! I look forward to sharing more tutorials with Lin as well as other pioneers.

Growing up on her family’s farm in upstate New York, Georgia developed a passion for simple farm-to table food and a deep connection to the outdoors. Having worked in the finance world after college, she decided to leave her cubicle and reconnect with her roots. After graduating from the French Culinary Institute, she began working in Michelin restaurants in New York and France, and soon started leading her renowned Adventure Getaways: excursions around the country aimed at promoting “manual literacy” and helping participants step outside of their comfort zone and experience life more viscerally. Georgia is a firm believer in empowering people to be self-sufficient, identify personal strengths and pursue their life passions.
