My brother has been finding them in the woods a lot lately. Tulipwood is in the midst of a state park which means there are lots of fallen trunks and wet leaves and other magical things to create the perfect stage for mushroom hunting.
Just the other day he sent me this picture from the woods… he found a giant one!
Do you know what kind of mushroom it is?

I heard you can eat Puffballs. True? (That picture is hilarious, btw, up top without the hand in it. Looks vaguely ominous.)

Yep, you can eat 'em : ) We do it all the time. Plus Marion from Food Heroes identified them too. I trust her.

Be reeeeally careful here folks….be sure to get David Aurora's book Mushrooms Demystified or the pocket version for in the field. Bottom line…it appears to be a "Puff Ball" yet depends on the underside of said shroom. Also depends on where it was found, puff balls like clay type soil. Lastly as a general rule…DO NOT eat any white shrooms per se…why?…Cause the Aminita family (see Auora's book for explanation) is a dangerous family,as in the Death Cap, with several white shrooms.
I stick to 5-6 shrooms only for safety sake. There are…. Porcini,Chantrell,Morel,Cyprus Agaracus,Oyster and the elusive PRINCE!!!! which tastes like almonds. One mushroom I would highly recommend you look into is the Matsutaki which grows next month in Northern Calif. I would buy some from pickers who will be out in droves and selling to the Japan fresh market. In a word….sublime!!!! Ciao…quinn in Carmel Valley
