Meet the Crew and Cast of Wild Food: Q&A with Colleen Laffey

It is crazy to believe that after 10 years of building her body of work, we are finally counting down the days until the premier of Georgia’s new show “Wild Food” on Destination America! If you haven’t already heard, the show premiers Saturday, June 23 at 10pm EST/9pm CT.

As a way to give you some sneak peeks into the making of the show, we asked some of the wonderful cast and crew members a series of questions which we’ll be posting here daily. Today it’s our Director of Photography, Colleen Laffey!

Read the other Q&A’s HERE.

What Georgia has to say about her:

The moment we sat down to interview Colleen I adored her. It helped that she handed me a box full of things she had foraged and made in her home in Virginia! There was moonshine, and smoked salts, and chestnuts and so many other delights. And then she told me that she makes her own sourdough starter, wow! She also is a very talented storyteller, her shots are just beautiful and everyone we mentioned her name to in the business said, “Wow, you got to work with Colleen Laffey?! She’s a gorgeous shooter.” And man oh man she is ‘ride or die’ and really got into some intense moments with me, right along side me to capture the moment. My kinda woman!

Meet the Crew and Cast of Wild Food: Q&A with Colleen Laffey:

What’s the wildest food you’ve ever tried?

Roasted raccoon. I don’t recommend it.

What’s something people would be surprised to know about Georgia?

Georgia is very down to earth, and down for whatever, which I love. She is an expert with a knife. That was impressive.

Do you have a favorite moment from filming the pilot?

The visit to the old fort was such a special moment. To be in a place that will be subsumed by water, a visual reminder of climate change and the effect it is having in coastal areas worldwide was eye-opening. I would never have had the chance to be in this place if it wasn’t for Georgia and her connection with Kimmie.

What’s the thing someone MUST do while visiting New Orleans?

Eat! Drink! Wander the streets. There are magical moments around every corner. I love to graze the town, a bite here, a drink there. I let myself be guided by chance, with no agenda. The rooftop bar of the Pontchartrain Hotel, the Hot Tin, is my favorite place for sunset cocktails.

What does Manual Literacy mean to you and how do you practice it in your life?

Living in a rural area, without access to bakeries, and loving bread, I taught myself how to make bread with my own sourdough starter. I chop wood for my woodstove for heat, I designed my own house, I compost. I’m planting fruit trees and shrubs and creating habitat for birds and insects. At the very least, I grow tomatoes and herbs. Hard to garden much when I’m working on the road. Some day I’d like to be mostly food independent.

What was your biggest laugh while filming?

I laughed every day! Kimmie and his kids each had such a great sense of humor, as did Jeff and Jill. Kimmie in the Rugaroo costume was hilarious.
