R.I.P. Lucy (a.k.a. I hate coyotes)

I had a nice post about pudding that I was about to share with you today. But I need to vent. So I hope you’ll indulge me. The pudding will have to wait until Monday.

I hate coyotes. They offer nothing and take everything.

On the plane ride two days ago I was watching a news story about how they are becoming so aggressive that they are coming into people’s yards in broad daylight.

Well, I just found out this morning that they took Lucy.

Lucy is a woman

I understand that there is a natural food web — those predator-prey relationships between species that transfers energy from one organism to the next. But what a horrible waste. Who preys on coyotes? No one anymore. Until now. (That’s me being mad).

Lucy arrived here in a very untraditional way.

She was was the lone white chicken, since as you found out yesterday, Loretta is now Lorenzo.

She laid lots of double yolked eggs and was generally a very fat chicken, who wobbled around. She was not very fast. Which in the end perhaps lead to her demise.

She had a love-affair with Buster, the mentally ill rooster. I supposed they are both in bird heaven together now.

Lucy is a woman2

You will be missed Lucy.

Watch out coyotes. You’re all dead meat. I’m writing a mincemeat coyote pie recipe as we speak. And polishing my rifle.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I wanted to let you know that me and my friends are out to cull the coyote horde's in 2 weeks. They kill too many game and furbearing creatures as well as turkey. We plan to help put a dent in their onslaught. I will "take" one in Lucy's honor.

So sorry to hear about Lucy. I used to have 14 turkeys come to my feeder, but I haven't seen any all winter long. February is coyote mating season, so they are a bit more active now.

They get some dogs here in L.A. I've stopped taking my pup hiking, as she's only 27 lbs., I think she's the perfect Coyote/Mtn. Lion/Bobcat Entree size. Sorry about, Lucy.

Our problem is not with coyotes but raccoons. They don't give up and we have to be diligent about locking up the coop every night. The coons check the locks around 3:30am without fail. Do you have any raccoon recipes? Um. Nevermind.

Sad to lose animals we are attached to. While I can't fully explain the advantages of having coyotes I am told they are part of the ecosystem. There were none around here 20 years ago and now there are with no obvious eco-improvement. Get a game call to trick them into gun range and put some pressure on them. They'll leave for a while.

Noooo! This is so sad, I'm sorry. A coyote took a stray kitten my parents had become attached to not too long ago, and they struggled with the same thing: On the one hand, nature is nature but on the other — poor kitten!

Nature, schmature. I hate coyotes too. We love the wild bunnies & jack rabbits that live here and feed them in the winter with dried corn on the cob and apples. They also come to gnaw on the quail seed block and have a drink of water which we provide year round. We love them and enjoy watching them and their new kits in the spring. Coyotes have killed all the jack rabbits around here, we rarely see them any more. I hope they all starve to death for killing our dear little bunnies. Sorry about your dear chicken, I love chickens too. Bastards!
