We’ve all been there, stranded at the bathroom sink, not able to squeeze any more out of the last tube of toothpaste. Don’t you worry though, your pearly whites will be just fine. Just slip back into your slippers and shuffle over to the kitchen. Here’s a super simple, and all natural, toothpaste you can whip up from ingredients you already have handy.
Okay, here’s what you’ll need:
Coconut Oil
Baking Soda
Sea Salt
Peppermint Oil
Liquid Stevia
Cinnamon (optional)
A small dish or container
Now let’s get to mixing!
The coconut oil and baking soda should be mixed in about a 1 to 1 ratio. I used about three tablespoons of each in my small batch. If you really like this natural paste, or are turned off by all the chemicals in traditional toothpaste, feel free to amp up your measurements and save it in an airtight container. Then you can just scoop some up whenever you brush.
To the coconut oil and baking soda I added a pinch of sea salt. Sea salt has amazing antiseptic qualities that help defend your mouth from bacteria.
Next came about 10 drops, about a 1/2 teaspoon, of peppermint oil. MMM…minty fresh!
To the mix, I added about 4 squirts of liquid stevia. This stuff is so neat! It helps with the flavor of the paste, and counteracts the bitterness of the baking soda.
Feel free to use regular stevia powder if that’s what you have on hand, about a half packet, or half teaspoon will do just fine.
Finally, I topped off my mix with a dash of cinnamon, because why not! Actually, cinnamon is a great antibacterial and helps freshen breath. Your toothpaste might be a little brown, but I promise, your teeth will be pearly white.
Then, just give it all a good mix…
There you have it!
I love how the cinnamon and peppermint mixed with the sweet stevia and coconut come together to taste more like an icing than toothpaste. Play with the amounts of mint, cinnamon, and stevia to get the taste just right for you. Then, feel free to share your tweaks or any extra special ingredients you add with the rest of us!
