How to Make Fruit Vases

One of my favorite things to do in summer is pick flowers and make bouquets. I sometimes find them growing wild in parking strips and random lots and really go to town. You don’t have to have a lot of land around you to make it work. You also don’t even need to have glass vases to put them in! In fact it’s far more fun to turn fruits or eggshells into vases and makes a great conversation piece at the table. So here is how to make fruit vases, give it a whirl and tell me what you think.

How to Do It

Remove the tops of the fruit with a paring knife and scoop out the insides. In the case of an avocado or mellon, cut a thin slice off the bottom so it can sit upright on a flat surface.

Add water and your favorite flowers and herbs, cut to short stems.

The avocado version works well with woody herbs like rosemary and thyme and you don’t have to scoop out the avocado flesh at all but rather use it to anchor in the stems. The other fruits should be scooped out well and filled with water.

I encourage you to make the most of what you have and use whatever onion grass, beautiful leaves, and wild flowers you have growing in your midst. And be sure to send me a picture of your creations on social media @GeorgiaPellegrini using #ModernPioneering.
