Favorite Thanksgiving food? Lasagna. Before the Turkey.

Hey, I'm from an Italian-American family from Brooklyn. Pasta first–always.

Smoked turkey. Here in the south deep fried turkeys seem to be the craze but smoked turkey makes

    a) the best turkey eaten right away

    b) awesome turkey sandwiches the rest of the week

    c) and the most awesome turkey soup

    Smoked = awesome! Amirite?

Favorite Thanksgiving food – dressing! Southern cornbread dressing to be precise. Very different from stuffing. I'll be posting a recipe for my family's dressing the week before the big day.

Turkey with giblet gravy…on my stuffing. Then of course, candied yams, cranberry sauce, roasted corn on the cob, and a plate of buttermilk biscuits. I like the leftover turkey between white bread with some homemade sweet pickles and a little mayo. Wait….I just made myself extremely hungry for Thanksgiving. Be Blessed Georgia. We know all about "grits" here in North Carolina.

I love sweet potatoe casserole with candied pecan topping. I dont even like sweet potatoes but love this dish. I have to say, I actually prefer the "lighter" version of the recipe.

Yep, the stuffing drizzled with some flavorful turkey gravy. And alongside it, freshly made homemade cranberry relish; a wonderful mix of tart cranberries and sweet oranges. Ah, just over 3 weeks to go…..

the turkey – plain and simple – mostly because i've missed it so. after being vegetarian and then vegan for 10 years, i happily came back to omnivorous bliss last year and had turkey. unadorned. roasted. awesome.

How cool that you're back to being an omnivore and loving it… I'm writing a lot about our omnivorousness these days for my next book so I find that kind of thing very interesting.

Favorite? Favorite is a strong word. But if my arm is being twisted on behalf of delicious snacks I can commit. To pie. Specifically a lofty, golden, double crusted apple pie with a nice piece of cheddar cheese.

I must say that Cranberry sauce is my favorite thing. It goes great with Turkey and stuffing and everything else. I was tempted to say Grits as we moved from the South to New Jersey and they seem to have no grits here. You can imagine that my country ham and grits experience has been curtailed of late.

My mom's mashed potatoes and gravy!

  • @PIOGreg
    Posted November 2, 2010 at 1:46 pm

While I can't get enough stuffing or homemade mashed potatoes with gravy, I've discovered with age that my favorite Thanksgiving food is the food that reminds me of my family. Growing up, mom and dad and my two brothers and two sisters kicked off the holiday season with my aunts and cousins, and sometimes relatives I'd never met before! The house was too warm and noisy, the windows opaque with condensation, for the stove was overfilled with turkey, ham and roast beef – and as many types of potato dishes – and red chile and green chile.

I can eat turkey and stuffing at any restaurant and be reasonably confident that it will taste fine, but well-made green chile is made with love. :^)

Bean salad! It's a family tradition on my husband's side, and it really is a lot better than it sounds. When I make it I always use venison or caribou hamburger and my husband's family is always eager to find out what exotic meat was used this time!

Stuffing, hands down. I get to eat it once a year (why is that anyway!?) and i eagerly anticipate every bite. I love mashed potatoes almost beyond reason, but I can make those any time. Stuffing requires many hours roasting in a turkey to attain perfection. Dang, now I may have to roast a "practice turkey" just to get some stuffing.

Sweet potatoes, two ways. One, is sweet potato casserole with the pecans and brown sugar on top. The other is a shredded sweet potato casserole with a custard-like base. That one is my favorite!

It's so hard to choose just one — especially because my favorite part of Thanksgiving is the blending of all the flavors. I love to take a small bit of turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing on my fork, dab a little cranberry relish on top and enjoy! I guess if I had to choose just one I would say my grandmothers homemade rolls — fresh out of the oven with a dollop of butter, there's nothing like 'em!

Here in Minnesota we have a side dish that is called lefse. It is made from potatoe and flour rolled out thin and then cooked on a gridle. My favorite dish is buttered lefse with left over turkey rolled up in it, a cold beer and a football game.

Wow, I've never heard of lefse, what are its origins, do you know? It reminds me a bit of this potato pancake dish called Boxty I learned about when I wrote Food Heroes.

It is a Scandinavian unleavened bread. It resembles a flour tortilla in color, shape and texture but its main ingredient is potatoe. My family gets together once a year right before Thanksgiving and we make it. We start the day before pealing and boiling potatoes and once cooled we "rice" them and add the rest of the ingredients and let it rest over night. The next day we then fire up all the lefse griddles and go to town. Lefse is also good with just butter and sugar.

Whole berry cranberry sauce (the kind that you can make from scratch with fresh cranberries) and cranberry bread from a recipe in the book "Cranberry Thanksgiving" by Wende and Harry Devlin.

I would say eating stuffing just made in the morning while we all watch the Macy's parade has got to be my favorite Thanksgiving thing to do! We make extra so we can indulge without guilt and eat more later when the turkey is ready!

A medley of stuffing and mashed potatoes with a dash of cranberry sauce and gravy does the trick. A like a good green to go with that as well.
